From idea to final product: the development of our rotating pizza board (Lazy Susan) made of rubberwood
A good product doesn't just happen. It takes time, testing, and attention to detail. At THINGS-TO-BUY, we wanted to develop a rotating pizza board that's not only stylish but also truly practical. It had to be stable while slicing, easy to rotate, and versatile at the table. And we succeeded—but not without a few important steps.
First test: bamboo vs. rubberwood
We started with two test samples:
One made of bamboo , light and sleek design
One made of rubberwood , heavier and more robust
We quickly noticed that the bamboo version was too light. The board easily slipped while cutting – which is definitely not what you want when dividing a hot pizza. The rubberwood model was sturdier, but also a bit heavy and, with a 15cm base plate, just not stable enough.
Practically further developed
We reviewed the design and made three important adjustments:
Base plate enlarged to 20 cm for extra stability
Number of rubber feet increased from 4 to 6 , so that the board stands firmly and does not slide
Optimal thickness of 1.8 cm chosen for balance between firmness and a comfortable height
These adjustments gave the board exactly the right grip, balance, and appearance. It turns smoothly, remains stable, and looks great on the table.
More than just a pizza board
Although we started with the idea of a rotating pizza plate, we quickly realized this plate is suitable for many more situations. Think of serving:
Tapas or snacks
Cake and pastries
Cheese platters during an evening with friends
The engraved cutting grooves make it extra handy for pizza, but don't get in the way when you use the board for other purposes.
Durable, stable and multifunctional – exactly what you want in a product for everyday use.
